Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa stretchered off after scary injury vs. Bengals

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was surrounded by teammates as he was stretchered off the field in Thursday's night's matchup at the Cincinnati Bengals.

While looking to hit a deep strike downfield in the second quarte, Tagovailoa was slammed to the ground by Bengals defensive tackle Josh Tupou at midfield.

He writhed in pain after the hit and his fingers contorted awkwardly. It was the second straight play Cincinnati defenders managed to hit Tagovailoa.

Tua injured Sunday: Mike McDaniel: If Tua Tagovailoa had head issue, ‘He wouldn't have been back out there'

As they began wheeling Tagovailoa off, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel went over and patted him and Bengals fans chanted "Tua! Tua!"

Tagovailoa was taken by ambulance to a Cincinnati hospital, the team announced. He was conscious with feeling in his extremities, the team said.

The Amazon Prime broadcast team later reported Tagovailoa was expected to return with the team on its flight back to Miami.

Teddy Bridgewater entered the game to replace Tagovailoa. Bridgewater is a South Florida native who attended Miami Northwestern High School.

NFLPA asked for investigation after Tua Tagovailoa returned from injury Sunday

The hit resembled a play from last week's win over Buffalo which saw Tagovailoa exit the field with fears of a potential concussion injury. The NFL is investigating whether concussion protocol was properly followed, though Tagovailoa insists he did not have a concussion.

Amazon Prime broadcaster Mike Ryan said the bent fingers were a neurological response to head trauma.
