Miami Hurricanes football falls just outside top third in ACC preseason poll

Fall camp opened Tuesday at the University of Miami, which was a very good thing for Hurricanes fans and their team that had to endure in 2022 their first 5-7 season since 2007.

But despite optimism that this team should surely be better than last year’s, the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference media poll released Tuesday reflected how much tougher it will be to get in that ACC title game in early December.

With the ACC eliminating divisions starting this season, Miami, picked last year to win the Coastal Division, was chosen to finish fifth in the conference by media members — 176 total. The top two teams in winning percentage will meet for the championship on Dec. 3 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Former Atlantic Division powerhouse Clemson, who beat North Carolina for the ACC title last season, again is projected to finish first in 2023 and meet (and defeat) fellow former Atlantic Division member Florida State for the league championship.

Clemson received 103 first-place votes and Florida State got 67.

North Carolina was voted to finish third in the ACC and got five first-place votes.

North Carolina State was voted fourth, with one first-place vote.
