Miami loses junior DE Jonathan Garvin to NFL Draft. He must skip the bowl game

The University of Miami will now have two fewer defensive ends at their upcoming bowl game.

A source confirmed to the Miami Herald on Saturday evening that Hurricanes junior Jonathan Garvin, a 6-4, 256-pound defensive end and former four-star recruit out of Lake Worth High, has retained an agent and will enter the 2020 NFL Draft.

Garvin will not play in UM’s bowl game that will be announced Sunday afternoon. He will be the second Canes defensive end to not play in the bowl, as graduate transfer Trevon Hill indicated he will also skip the postseason game.

Michael Perchik of ABC 11 WTVD first posted the news on Twitter.

Garvin started all 12 games this season, finishing with 37 tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, four quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles. Last week in UM’s loss at Duke he had a game-high 10 tackles, two sacks, 3 1/2 tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

Last season was Garvin’s best, as he finished with a career-best 60 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 5 1/2 sacks, two fumble recoveries and five pass breakups. He also scored a touchdown on a fumble return.

Without Garvin, Miami still has redshirt freshman defensive end Greg Rousseau, who has 14 sacks and 18 tackles for loss this season and was just named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Defensive Rookie of the Year. The Canes also have Scott Patchan, who started the first five games of the season, as well as true freshman Jahfari Harvey, a 6-4, 240-pound former consensus four-star prospect out of Vero Beach High. Harvey has played in three games this season and can play in the bowl game and still retain his redshirt status.
