Miami Marathon runners will take over the streets Sunday. That means detours for drivers

It won’t be easy getting to the beach for an early swim on Sunday. Or to Coconut Grove for an early breakfast. Some causeways and many major roads will be shut down for hours as thousands of runners hit the streets for the annual Miami Marathon.

On Saturday and Sunday, three marathon events will run through downtown Miami, the MacArthur Causeway, Miami Beach, the Venetian Causeway, the Rickenbacker Causeway and Coconut Grove.

Most street shutdowns will begin between 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. and will reopen between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

If your weekend plans can resist an onslaught of traffic, you may want to take the Julia Tuttle Causeway to get in and out of Miami Beach.

When it comes to downtown Miami, getting in isn’t the issue because interstates and expressways won’t have detours. But moving around downtown and South Beach will be a challenge.

Here are all the roads to avoid, and when, as the Miami Marathon performs a traffic choke-hold on downtown Miami, Miami Beach and the Grove.
