Miami Marlins outfielder Peyton Burdick, a former Glen Este High School standout, singled to left field against Chicago Cubs starter Drew Smyly in the top of the 3rd inning Saturday at Wrigley Field for his first big-league hit.

The Marlins promoted Burdick from the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp to the majors ahead of the scheduled three-game series against the Cubs in Chicago.

Burdick made his MLB debut in Friday's series opener, batting seventh and playing left field for Miami.

Burdick, 25, ranks 10th among the Marlins' prospects, according to MLB.com. He entered Thursday batting .229 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs in 385 plate appearances in his first season in Jacksonville.

Burdick, a third-round selection out of Wright State University in the 2019 MLB Draft, did not play in Jacksonville's win Thursday against Memphis.

After missing the 2017 season at Wright State following Tommy John surgery, Burdick bounced back to win the Horizon League tournament MVP honors in 2018 and player of the year accolades in 2019, when he batted .407/.538/.729 with 15 homers and 24 steals. The Marlins loved his performance, metrics and makeup so they took him in the third round -- and he has exceeded expectations ever since. He posted a .949 OPS with 64 RBIs in 69 games while leading Low-A Clinton to the Midwest League Finals in 2019, then topped the Double-A South in homers (23), runs (71) and walks (76).
