Miami QB D'Eriq King returning to Hurricanes in 2021

Miami quarterback D’Eriq King is coming back for a second season with the Hurricanes.

King announced Saturday that he would return for the 2021 season. The Houston transfer eschewed the NFL after the NCAA gave all football players an extra season of eligibility because of the coronavirus pandemic.

King has been one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football in recent seasons. He has thrown for 22 touchdowns and rushed for four in 2020 as Miami went 8-2 in the regular season. King is 200-of-315 passing for 2,570 yards with five interceptions while also rushing for 520 yards this season.

King transferred to Miami in the offseason after playing four games at Houston in 2019 and taking a redshirt year for a potential transfer. The decision to leave Houston came as the Cougars struggled in coach Dana Holgorsen’s first season with the team.

In 2018, King had 50 total touchdowns. He threw for nearly 3,000 yards and tossed 36 TDs to just six interceptions while rushing for 674 yards and 14 touchdowns in 11 games. King scored at least one passing TD and one rushing TD in each of his last 15 games with the Cougars.

King’s return should help keep Miami near the top of the ACC in 2021 and he will enter the season as one of the top quarterbacks in the conference alongside North Carolina’s Sam Howell. The Hurricanes finished third in the ACC in 2020, and with Notre Dame’s expected departure back to independent status in 2021 should be the favorite to win the ACC Coastal and play Clemson in the ACC title game.

A matchup with Clemson to end the 2021 regular season would mean a season bookended by playoff teams. Miami opens 2021 against Alabama.

The No. 18 Hurricanes will end the 2020 season on Tuesday in the Cheez-It Bowl against Oklahoma State.
