Miami Springs special election set for Aug. 18

Miami Springs announced that it will hold a special election on Aug. 18 for a Group III council seat.

The following candidates met the qualification criteria by the June 11 filing deadline, according to the city:

— Walter Fajet, a school principal

— Jasmine Gomez, an operations manager

— Fred Gonzalez, a Little League coach

— Sandra Ruiz, IT project manager

Former council member Mara Zapata recently resigned from her council seat as she makes a bid for the District 5 seat on the Miami-Dade County School Board. Current Miami Springs councilman Jaime Petralanda is also running for a District 5 seat but has not yet resigned.

Miami Springs selected former Councilman George Lob at last week’s council meeting to serve as an interim Group III member until the election takes place.
