Sir Michael Caine is retiring from acting.

The 88-year-old star told BBC Radio that “Best Sellers,” which hit theaters last month, will likely be his last. The Oscar-winning Englishman said he hasn’t actually acted in two years, but the film is only now making the rounds. He says a spine problem and weak legs have slowed him down. Though according to Caine, who is a published author, he will continue telling stories.

“I’m now not an actor, I’m a writer,” he told the BBC. “Which is lovely, because as an actor you have to get up at half past 6 in the morning and go to the studio. As a writer, you start writing without leaving the bed!”

Caine somewhat left the door open for a return to stage and screen, though admitted the business has largely forced his hand.

“There haven’t been any offers honestly for two years, because nobody’s been making any movies I wanna do,” he said. “There’s not exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man that’s 88, you know?”

Screenrant reports that Vin Diesel had hoped Caine would appear in his “Fast & Furious” franchise, which not too long ago added Dame Helen Mirren to its cast. That movie site also assures Caine fans they will see him onscreen at least one more time when the Czech historical drama “Medieval” hits theaters next year. That film reportedly finished shooting in late 2018, but hasn’t yet found its way to theaters.

Caine’s Wikipedia page already describes him as “a retired English actor.”
