A father-of-three has won the biggest payout in BetFred’s history after scooping £5.4m from a £1.40 game.

Michael Clark, 32, won the huge sum on a single spin on the King Kong Cashpots game.

He has now quit his job as a careworker and is planning to marry his fiancé Sherelle Pooley at Newcastle United’s home ground St James’s Park.

Clark, from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, said: “At first I thought I won £5,000 and I was happy with that but to hit the jackpot was just mind blowing.”

Clark added: “I rang my mum and dad and I was crying my eyes out. I couldn’t help it because it was a big win and it was overwhelming.”

The Newcastle United fan has been engaged for seven years to Pooley and will be using a portion of his winnings to upgrade her engagement ring.

On booking St James’s Park as the venue for their wedding, he said: “It would be a beautiful venue and I’ve looked at some of the wedding packages, so to do one of them would be amazing.”

Clark, now dubbed by his family as ‘Mickey Millions’, has decided to take a break from working in the care industry and wants to start investing in property.

He added: “If I can continue my fortune and leave a legacy for my kids then that will be life complete.

“Your job in life is to enjoy yourself and set your kids up. I’m 32 years old and I feel like I can do that already, so it’s still mind blowing.”

Clark's win is huge but still pales in comparison to the biggest gambling wins in the UK.

Last May, Jess and Joe Thwaite became the country’s biggest-ever EuroMillions winners after scooping a whopping £184m, but they were soon knocked off the top spot in July when an anonymous winner took home £195m.

In September, another anonymous winner scooped £171m.
