SOUTH BEND — The Art League holds its next luncheon at 11:30 a.m. May 16 at The Blue Heron at Blackthorn, 5440 Nimtz Pkwy.

Michael Lasater, an Indiana University South Bend professor emeritus of mass communications, will discuss video art, beginning with a quick overview from its first appearance in the mid-1960s as a camera, performance and object-based medium to its current practice as computer composition.

He will offer several of his own pieces illustrating how he has produced a body of “new media” work based in traditional aesthetics — music, painting, photography, film, poetry — old media.

Lasater has performed as a professional trombonist, produced nationally distributed documentaries on poetry and music, and exhibits art video internationally. Six of his video compositions are in the South Bend Museum of Art’s permanent collection.

His poetry has been published in a number of journals and collections, including INverse, the Indiana state poetry archive, and The Heartland Review, where he is the winner of the 2019 Joy Bale Boone Poetry Prize.

The Art League is an auxiliary body of SBMA.
