Michael Sheen has lined up a gripping new BBC drama.

The Good Omens actor is re-teaming with writer James Graham following their success with the ITV drama Quiz, only this time, Sheen will be directing the three-part series The Way.

The series is based around the Driscoll family as they face the terrifying prospect of having to leave the country they've called home during civil unrest.

The Driscolls must overcome numerous dangers and the comforts of their old lives as they adapt to a new world of hardships and cruelty.

The Way was created for the BBC by Sheen, Graham and documentarian Adam Curtis (The Power Of Nightmares and Can't Get You Out of My Head), and will be filmed in Port Talbot in Wales later this year.

"I’m such an admirer of Adam and James’ work, so to create this project with them in these extraordinary times has been thrilling," Sheen said.

"I’m so excited to be telling this global story through the prism of my hometown and its community as we dig into the rollercoaster ride of our recent past and the mysterious depths that lay beneath.”

Graham added: "Working with Michael Sheen and Adam Curtis on building this story has been one of those 'pinch-me' moments in the life of a writer.

"To tell a story set in Michael’s home community, and tapping into all the political and social themes of the moment – strikes, division, chaos and a loss of control – all while infusing it, we hope, with humour, magic and imagination has been the most creatively satisfying experience."

Sheen remains a very busy actor, having recently reunited with David Tennant on the second series of Good Omens. He has starred in the Wagatha Christie drama series Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama as well.

The Welsh actor welcomed his second child with partner Anna Lundberg this past May. He also has two older children.

Good Omens is streaming now on Prime Video. A second series has been announced.
