Michaels plans to open Lima store this fall

Apr. 14—LIMA — The largest arts and crafts retail chain in North America will now be freshening up a Lima storefront that's been vacant for five years.

Company officials confirmed Michaels will open a store this fall at the site of the former Toys R Us store, 2292 Elida Road, Lima.

"We are very excited to open a Michaels Store in Lima, OH, in the coming months!" Rachel Petersen, the head of corporate and product communications for Michaels, said via email.

Michaels provides arts, crafts, framing, floral, home decor and seasonal merchandise for customers. As its website says, "We believe anyone can make, and we're on a mission to inspire and encourage everyone to unleash his or hear inner maker."

Crews were working at the site this week, bringing in drywall, in preparation for an overhaul of the facility.

"While we don't have a specific timeline to share just yet, we expect to open in the fall and look forward to welcoming the community with a grand opening event," Petersen said.

The storefront has been vacant since June 2018, when Toys R Us closed its Lima store as part of a nationwide shutdown. Toys R Us opened at that location in Lima in 1987.
