Michelle Obama DNC Speech Rips Trump's 'Chaos,' Calls For Empathy

MILWAUKEE, WI — Former first lady Michelle Obama touched on topics including empathy, the country's promise and President Donald Trump while delivering a speech virtually Monday during the first night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention.

Obama, a South Side Chicago native, spoke of the beauty and pain in the "story of America" and how important it is to vote in the Nov. 3 presidential election.

Like Obama, almost all convention speakers are staying away because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the thousands of delegates have also been asked to stay home. In addition, presidential candidate Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris aren't traveling to Milwaukee.

In her message to the American people, Obama also touched on the importance of the upcoming election, saying, "who we choose as our president in this election will determine whether or not we honor that struggle and chip away at that injustice and keep alive the very possibility of finishing that work."

She also called for strong leadership, slamming the Trump administration by saying, "Whenever we look to this White House for some leadership or consolation or any semblance of steadiness, what we get instead is chaos, division, and a total and utter lack of empathy."

Obama also referenced Trump's recent comments on the coronavirus deaths in which he reacted to the large death toll by saying, "It is what it is."

"Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country," Obama said. "He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is."

In a series of Tweets, the president responded to Obama's remarks, referring to himself in the third person, saying, "Donald J. Trump would not be here, in the beautiful White House, if it weren’t for the job done by your husband, Barack Obama." He also lashed out at Obama's response to the H1N1 swine flu outbreak, which killed an estimated 150,000 to 575,000 worldwide. To date at least 775,000 people around the world have died from the coronavirus, including more than 170,500 Americans.
