Michigan to auction waterfront property, wooded lots across the state

The state of Michigan is auctioning off properties throughout the Upper and Lower peninsulas starting Aug. 2 through Sept. 9. The state Department of Natural Resources will host 15 online auctions for vacant land, including lots with waterfront access to lakes and rivers.

Many parcels do not have public road access or may be unbuildable because of water proximity. Others feature large acreage with water access — true steals. A few are located in metro Detroit, including Macomb and Washtenaw counties.

Here are some glamour buys:

Chippewa County

This 36-acre residential property is forested with water frontage on the east side of Garkinghouse Lake.

On the southwest corner of the Johnson Road and Thompson Road intersection, the property's lowest bid goes for $55,500.

Although it is landlocked, 40 acres of residential property 3 miles south of Paradise, Michigan, has frontage on a bay of Preacher Lake. The south end of the property is granted easement to an electric cooperative. The site lists it for $14,500.

Dickinson County

A 40-acre property has about 1,200 feet of water frontage on Sturgeon River and is zoned for timber production. The river runs through the land, isolating a small portion of the property. The state of Michigan does not own mineral rights on this waterfront location. The lowest bid runs at $45,000.

Houghton County

Despite having no road access, 18.5 acres of vacant land with 3,000 feet of water frontage on Torch Lake Bay lists for $169,000. Only 5.5 miles from Lake Linden, the property is located west of Bootjack Road and south of the Mud Lake Road intersection near five other landowners.

How to bid

Register at Tax-sale.info prior to the property's auction date. Absentee votes are valid up to 30 days before the auction.

Interactive bidding begins at 10 a.m. on the day of the auction and goes until 7 p.m.
