ABOUT LAST GAME: Why U-M postponed matchup vs. MSU seemingly overnight
Game notes: Michigan might be fighting rust having not played since Jan. 4, with its past two games postponed. The teams only played once last season (the Illini won) and Illinois took both matchups in 2019-20. Michigan won the lone meeting in 2018-19.
Brad Underwood's fifth Illini team has two wins over the past week and five straight wins to start conference play. Kofi Cockburn is in All-American mode again this season, averaging a bulky 22.0 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, each top five among all players in Division I. Trent Frazier, who could be headed for his fifth straight season of playing 30 games for the Illini, is shooting career bests of 38.8% from 3-point range and 41.4% from the field. Last season, Frazier had 22 points vs. Michigan in the Illini's surprising runaway victory near the end of the regular season.
If U-M can keep the COVID-19 issues at bay, up next is a Tuesday home game vs. Maryland. Illinois is scheduled to play Monday at home vs. Purdue.
