Michigan Republican Congressman Jack Bergman made it official Friday that he is in the race to be speaker of the U.S. House.

Bergman, R-Waterstreet, made the announcement after U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio fell short of the required number of votes for a third consecutive ballot and withdrew from the race.

Bergman voted for Jordan all three times. Bergman received no votes for speaker in Friday's voting, despite saying Wednesday that he was interested in running for the job to help end "chaos" in both Congress and in national and world affairs. He said he would only serve until the end of the current Congress.

"My hat is in the ring, and I feel confident I can win the votes where others could not," Bergman said on the social media platform X. "I have no special interests to serve; I’m only in this to do what's best for our nation and to steady the ship for the 118th Congress.

In 2022, Bergman was elected to a fourth two-year term in Michigan's 1st Congressional District, which is comprised of the Upper Peninsula and much of the northern Lower Peninsula. Bergman served in Vietnam and retired from the U.S. Marine Corps with the rank of lieutenant general.
