Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources launched a new shuttle service for Belle Isle on Thursday.

The shuttle will run from Thursdays through Sundays, from noon to 8:30 p.m. It will be free for Belle Isle visitors.

There will be pick up from the conservatory, aquarium and the beach, and drop-off at the kids’ playground and the beach. It will only run throughout the island and will not connect with the mainland.

The DNR aims to ease Belle Isle’s traffic congestion, as there is limited parking near the beach area. Just last month, there was a fatal hit-and-run on the island.

Scott Pratt, chief of southern field operations for the DNR’s Parks and Recreation department, told WDET-FM that the project had been in the works for a few years.
