Michigan football announces annual team trip, upcoming visit to local holocaust museum

Pack the snacks, it's road trip time for Michigan football.

The program's social media team posted a preview video Sunday afternoon which announced the team will again take a spring trip and this time it's a road trip which will include stops in Canton, Ohio; Cleveland; Washington; New York; and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

While the details are still being finalized, program spokesman Dave Ablauf told the Free Press the team will go to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame, tour the Capitol and go to a Washington Nationals baseball game, among other events.

On the list of stops that are officially on the docket in D.C. is the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The team also has plans for a visit to the Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills next month Ablauf confirmed, though the official date is not yet set.

"When we've done these trips throughout the years, there's always been an educational component in it," Ablauf said.

Last October, U-M running back Donovan Edwards re-tweeted a video with antisemitic rhetoric. After he initially called the incident a "glitch," he later apologized for the incident and said, "I would like to make it clear: I apologize for mistakenly retweeting a message that was so hurtful to so many especially those in the Jewish Community."

The upcoming offseason road trip will be the fifth during the Jim Harbaugh era, which began with a trek to to Italy in 2017. That followed with two more trips abroad — France (2018) and South Africa — before plans in 2020 and 2021 were both canceled due to the pandemic.

When the Wolverines returned to their travels, it was with a tour around the state of Michigan last season with stops at places like Mackinac Island, Traverse City and the Upper Peninsula.

"It's supposed to be educational," Ablauf said. "But also sightseeing and fun and an experience not a lot of people get to have."
