Michigan gas prices hit new 2022 low before Christmas, down 17 cents in a week

Gas prices in Michigan have dropped yet again, just in time for the holidays.

Since last week, the price in the state fell to an average of $3.07 per gallon. This is "a new 2022-low," according to an AAA news release. "This price is 81 cents less than this time last month, and 8 cents less than this time last year."

Motorists are currently paying an average of $46 for a full 15-gallon tank — $5 less than 2021's highest price last November.

Gas prices usually plummet during the winter when fewer drivers are on the roads due to less daylight and harsher driving conditions.

The demand for gas has decreased while the total domestic gas stocks increased by 4.5 million barrels, according to new data from the Energy Information Administration. Crude prices also increased because of a weaker dollar.

In a few metro Detroit areas, gas prices are below $3 a gallon.

"Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.99 per gallon, which is the lowest price since May of 2021," the AAA news release said. "This price is about 11 cents less than last week’s average and 27 cents less than this same time last year."

Michigan's least expensive gas:

  • Marquette: $2.94

  • Flint: $2.99

  • Metro Detroit: $2.99.

Michigan's most expensive gas:

  • Traverse City: $3.37

  • Jackson: $3.23

  • Grand Rapids: $3.19.

"As demand remains low and stocks grow, drivers will likely continue to see pump prices decrease through the holiday week." said AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland in the news release.
