Michigan high school bowling state finals: Gobles' Morgan Brunner wins third straight title

Entering the final game of the Division 3 girls bowling individual championship match at JAX60 in Jackson on Saturday, Sydney Nichols needed a big score.

She trailed after the first of two games, 185-170. But the Onsted junior found that big number.

Nichols rolled a 205, besting Coloma senior Savannah Hamilton's 185 for a final cumulative score of 375-370 for Nichols' first state title.

On the boys side of Division 3, Stockbridge senior Mason Keene beat Gladwin junior Harvey Zelt, 407-363, for the state title.

In Division 1, Clarkston sophomore Katie Stephens, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, toppled Flushing's Hannah Reid, 411-307, for the girls title at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park. Waterford Mott junior Brendan Riley beat Mattawan senior Charlie Johnson, 377-363.

Century Lanes in Waterford hosted the Division 2 finals, where Charlotte freshman Savannah Portillo defeated Fruitport senior Brynna Hanson, 413-384. Portillo scored no lower than a 405 in each of her four finals matches. Grand Rapids Christian junior Zeke Heerema outlasted Tecumseh junior Owen Williams, 388-382, thanks to a five-pin advantage in the first game and eking out a one-pin win (182-181) in the second.

In the Division 4 finals at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek, Saginaw Nouvel sophomore Alex McCarthy beat classmate Bryce Cadaret of Allen Park Cabrini, 433-393, and Morgan Brunner won her third straight girls title as the Gobles senior beat Traverse City Christian senior Brooke Smith, 415-303.

In Friday's team finals, Wayne Memorial boys and Holt girls won Division 1. Wayne rolled a 1,331, edging Woodhaven (1,244), in the final while Holt topped Traverse City West, 1,197 to 1,078. In Division 2, the Flint Kearsley boys beat New Boston Huron, 1,455-1,338 for the state title while Sparta beat South Lyon East by six pins, 1,123-1,117, for the girls crown.

Division 3 was won by the Flint Powers girls, who beat Ishpeming Westwood, 1,024-1,007, in the final round, as well as the Lansing Catholic boys, who defeated Ogemaw Heights, 1,239-1,216. In Division 4, Taylor Trillium Academy's girls team won its first state title with a 1,074-1,051 victory over Beaverton. The Grass Lake boys also won the state championship, beating New Lothrop, 1,253-1,123.
