Michigan high school skiing finals: Traverse City West wins boys, girls state titles

Traverse City remains the capital of skiing in Michigan.

Traverse City West won both the boys and girls Division 1 state championships in skiing at Schuss Mountain at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire on Monday.

The West girls actually finished in a tie with Traverse City Central, both scoring 69.5 points, but West won the state championship via a narrow tie-breaker, ending Central's two-year run atop Division 1. It's also the first time since 2015 that West won a state title in girls skiing.

Forest Hills Northern-Eastern finished third, followed by Clarkston and Rochester Adams.

Central's Quinn Gerber won the giant slalom and Adams' Katie Fodale won the slalom event.

The West boys won their third straight state title. Marquette, Brighton and Clarkston rounded out the top five. West' Caleb Lewandowski pulled off the double championship, winning the slalom -- for the second straight year -- and giant slalom events.

In the Division 2 championships at Boyne Mountain, the Petoskey boys won its fourth straight title, followed by Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. And the Notre Dame Prep girls won its third in a row, followed by Petoskey.

Petoskey's Wyatt Mattson won the boys giant slalom and his teammate, Nolan Walkerdine, won the slalom. Petoskey's Marley Spence won the girls giant slalom, defending her state crown, and the slalom.
