Michigan hockey beats Penn State, advances to Frozen Four

Michigan hockey fans were on pins and needles late into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. A trip to the Frozen Four on the line, the Wolverines were looking to continue their momentum after an 11-1 win over Colgate.

Michigan had opportunities against 2-seed Penn State and thought it had scored in the first period, yet the puck careened off the post, just shy of crossing the line. With PSU on the power play, it scored at the 18:58 mark in the second period, thus the 1-seed maize and blue had to find a way to come back while in hostile territory, as the Nittany Lion crowd packed in the PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

At 12:08 in the third period, on their fourth power play of the game, the Wolverines finally evened the score thanks to an Adam Fantilli goal. But neither team could get much of anything going for the rest of the period, and the game went to overtime — the first in this year’s version of the tournament.

It took all of a few moments, and Mackie Samoskevich broke free right in front of the goal at the 0:52 mark to win, 2-1, propelling Michigan hockey to the Frozen Four to face fellow 1-seed Quinnipiac in Tampa. That game will take place on April 6 at 8:30 p.m. EDT. Should the Wolverines win that game, they would face either Minnesota or Boston on April 8.
