Michigan homicide suspect Chadwick Shane Mobley captured in Montana after escaping during transport

Authorities on Monday regained custody of a man facing a murder charge in Michigan following a massive search in Montana, where he was being transported from.

Chadwick Shane Mobley, 42, escaped Sunday and was taken back into custody Monday in Plains, Montana, the Sander's County Sheriff Office said Monday night.

People in Plains saw Mobley and tipped off law enforcement, the sheriff's office said.

"Great work by all, together we made a difference! Not just for our community, but for the victims of the crimes he is suspected of, and being charged with," the sheriff's office said on Facebook.

Mobley is a suspect in the 2011 death of Andrea Eilber, who was fatally shot in Michigan.

Mobley's escape and subsequent capture comes as another escaped inmate is on the run from law enforcement in Pennsylvania. Michael Charles Burham is wanted in connection to a murder case and is separately charged with kidnapping an elderly couple.

Chadwick Shane Mobley escaped at Montana gas station

Mobley was being transported by private company around 10 a.m. Sunday when he escaped at a gas station and convenience store, according to the Sanders County Sheriff's Office. His transport was contracted by the U.S. Marshals Service, according to the sheriff's office.

Why was Mobley being transported to Michigan?

Mobley was identified as a suspect in the killing of Eilber, who was shot in the head at the home of a relative in Michigan, after evidence at the scene was tested for DNA, the attorney general's office in Michigan said in a statement last month.

He was initially apprehended in June in Libby, Montana, and was awaiting transfer to Michigan to be arraigned on murder and firearm charges, according to the statement.

Michael C. Burham, 34, escaped from the Warren County Prison, in Warren, Pa., on July 6, 2023, according to Warren police. The police released this photo on July 7, 2023.

Pennsylvania authorities continue search for Michael Charles Burham

Federal, state and local agencies in northern Pennsylvania continued to search Tuesday for an inmate who escaped prison using an improvised rope, authorities said.

The City of Warren Police Department said Burham, 34, escaped from the Warren County Prison on Thursday by tying sheets together to make a rope and using it to slide off the roof of the prison, the Erie Times-News, part of the USA TODAY Network reported.

In a Saturday news conference, Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police said Burham is a “self-taught survivalist with military experience and could be potentially holed up in a wooded area.”

Monday, authorities said they found small campsites and stockpiles that may be connected to Burham in the northern Pennsylvania woods. Police also said they believe someone may be helping the Burham evade law enforcement, the Associated Press reported.

Burham is wanted in connection to the killing of a woman in Jamestown, New York, on May 11, the publication reported. He is accused of fleeing the area after her death, which led to a multi-agency search that ended with his arrest in South Carolina on May 24.

Burham – who has not been charged in the homicide – has been charged with kidnapping an elderly couple and stealing their SUV at gunpoint on May 20 to drive to South Carolina, the Times-News reported.

Burham was being held on a $1 million bond in the kidnapping case.
