• MSU update: The Spartans are whole again for the first time in a couple weeks, with Malik Hall’s return from a foot injury sparking MSU to a 63-61 win over Iowa on Thursday night. MSU is 8-0 in indoor games this season that Hall has been able to finish. He wasn’t available for the Spartans’ last matchup against Purdue, a one-point loss on Jan. 16 in East Lansing. At 6-4 in the Big Ten, MSU probably needs four more wins anywhere the rest of the season to secure an NCAA tournament bid. Mackey Arena has been a house of horrors lately for the Spartans, who haven’t won there since 2014.

MORE: Couch: Malik Hall thought his season was over. He isn't wasting this second chance to lead Michigan State's basketball team.

• Purdue update: The Boilermakers have won three more games since their visit to East Lansing, winning at Minnesota and Michigan and beating Maryland at home. Purdue's 20-1 record is its best start in program history. The Boilermakers have held every opponent this season to 70 points or less. Big man Zach Edey, among the favorites to be national player of the year, has more blocked shots (45) than fouls against him (32) this season, much to the chagrin of his opponents.

MORE: Couch: MSU needs more from Mady Sissoko. The center position is no longer clearly his.

• Inside the matchup: MSU doesn’t want to change too much from the last meeting. After all, the Spartans were just one more bucket or stop away from beating Purdue. But that was at Breslin Center. MSU will probably need to play about 10 points better to have a chance in Mackey Arena. Malik Hall’s return helps and gives the Spartans more creative options defensively on Zach Edey. They pretty much played him straight up in the first meeting, allowing him to get his points, while staying home on shooters. The plan nearly worked. Still, Tom Izzo said he expects a more varied approach this time.

• Prediction: To predict an MSU win, I have to be able to picture it. And I can’t do that at Mackey. It’s been too long. I've seen too much. Unless Boilermaker-killer Branden Dawson is allowed to suit up for the Spartans, this feels like a big ask. I do think MSU’s backcourt and the presence of Hall will keep this competitive.

• Make it: Purdue 73, MSU 65
