Players coming to East Lansing for 2023 season

RB Jaren Mangham, South Florida

Vitals: 6-2, 231.

The buzz: Older brother of Spartans safety Jaden Mangham. Jaren played for MSU head coach Mel Tucker at Colorado in 2019 — he committed to the Buffaloes under previous coach Mike MacIntyre, but had the Spartans as a finalist — then transferred to South Florida after the 2020 season. Scored 15 rushing touchdowns on just 160 carries for the Bulls in 2021. Played in four games in 2022, running for 104 yards on 24 carries with three scores. Attended Detroit Cass Tech for high school.

OL Keyshawn Blackstock, Coffeyville Community College (Kansas)

Vitals: 6-5, 315.

The buzz: He's the No. 1 junior college interior offensive linemen, and the No. 8 overall Juco player by 247Sports.com’s composite rankings. Had offers from top Power Five schools including USC, Oklahoma, Auburn and Tennessee, and five other Big Ten programs. Native of Covington, Georgia, will arrive in January with two years of eligibility.

DT Dre Butler, Liberty

Vitals:  6-5, 300.

The buzz: Played at the same high school as Blackstock, Newton High in Covington, Georgia. MSU will be Butler's third stop in the past four seasons. He's a sixth-year transfer. Had 20 tackles and a sack in 13 games at Auburn during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, then recorded 23 tackles and 1½ sacks in 13 games for the Flames.

DT Jarrett Jackson, Florida State

Vitals: 6-6, 308.

The buzz: Played in 11 games in 2022 as a redshirt sophomore for the Seminoles, where had 12 total tackles. He started his college career at Louisville as a true freshman in 2018. He's from Riviera Beach, Florida.

LB Aaron Alexander, Massachusetts

Vitals: 6-1, 205.

The buzz: Alexander won a state title in 2021 at Belleville, then decommitted from the Michigan Wolverines during the signing period in mid-December. He landed with UMass, where he played in three games as a freshman.

RB Nathan Carter, Connecticut

Vitals: 5-9, 199.

The buzz: Carter gained 405 yards on 65 carries (6.2 yards per carry) with a touchdown in five games as a sophomore this season, running for 190 yards on 20 carries vs. Utah State in the season opener. Ran for 21 yards on six carries in Week 4 vs. Michigan. Had 125 attempts for 578 yards and two scores in 2021, with 19 receptions for 127 yards.

TE Jaylan Franklin, Wisconsin

Vitals: 6-4, 220.

The buzz: Franklin was a standout duel-threat quarterback and basketball player at Gibraltar Carlson, but with the Badgers switched from linebacker to tight end before 2020. He mostly played on special teams. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

TE Ademola Faleye, Norfolk State

Vitals: 6-7, 235.

The buzz: Faleye provides massive size at the position, but caught just nine passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns in 20 games over the past two seasons. He is from Brockton, Massachusetts and will be eligible to play for two seasons.

TE Tyneil Hopper, Boise State

Vitals: 6-2, 250.

The buzz: Had 13 catches for 108 yards this season in eight games and will come to MSU as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility. Caught two touchdowns on seven receptions in 2021. He's from Roswell, Georgia.

CB Semar Melvin, Wisconsin

Vitals: 5-11, 170.

The buzz: Was a three-star recruit from Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the 2019 class. Made five tackles and had two passes defensed in four games in 2022.

K Jonathan Kim, North Carolina

Vitals: 6-0, 210.

The buzz: From Fredericksburg, Virginia, recruiting class of 2019. Kim served as the kickoff specialist for North Carolina, but seemingly wanted a chance to put points on the board. Is 0-for-1 in his career on field goals, missing a 50-plus yarder as a freshman, and is 3-for-3 on extra points.

Transfers leaving East Lansing for 2023 season

LB Carson Casteel

The buzz: A redshirt freshman linebacker from Florence, Alabama, Casteel played in eight games, recording no statistics this season. He missed 2021 with an injury.

WR Germie Bernard

The buzz: Bernard — a high school teammate of MSU backup QB Katin Houser for two seasons in Henderson, Nevada — appeared in 12 games in 2022, catching seven passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns. A four-star recruit, Bernard originally signed with Washington, but was released from his letter of intent after the Huskies’ coaching change.

DL Chase Carter

The buzz: Carter was a freshman who was a three-star prospect in the 2022 class. He played in one game, against Akron.

DL Jalen Hunt

The buzz: Began the season as a reserve, but eventually was inserted into the starting lineup after the Michigan-MSU tunnel incident on Oct. 29 led to the suspensions of eight MSU defensive players. Played in seven games and had nine total tackles on the season. Hunt was a former three-star recruit in the 2019 class from Belleville.

DL Dashaun Mallory

The buzz: Just like Hunt, Mallory was a reserve, but started in the final month of the season. Played in eight games in 2022 and had 16 total tackles. Mallory is from Bolingbrook, Illinois and joined MSU in its 2018 recruiting class.

DL Michael Fletcher, Appalachian State

The buzz: Fletcher, out of Flint Carmen-Ainsworth, played in eight games this season. The 6-foot-6, 260-pounder had a career-best 13 tackles. He was the top defensive lineman in the state of Michigan in the class of 2019.

K Jack Stone

The buzz: Stone finished 2-for-4 on field-goal attempts as a freshman in 2022. The 6-foot, 190-pound Dallas native handled kickoffs all season with 53 attempts but only 13 touchbacks.
