Michigan State reopens student Union, 'the living room of our campus'

EAST LANSING — Michigan State University’s student Union reopened Monday morning, seven weeks after a devastating on-campus shooting.

Students entered the building, where lounges and computer labs are open, plus an open Sparty’s mini-market.

Some wandered to the third floor’s Lake Huron Room, which is being used as a "Reflection Room" to view memorials and tributes from alumni and other members of the Spartan community.

“The MSU Union team looks forward to welcoming those who are ready to use the space once more, knowing that for some, more time may be need and for others, feelings might shift once on site,” said the building’s Facebook page.

“It is ok to step away or delay returning if it doesn’t feel right to you. The MSU Union has supported nearly 100 years of Spartans and will continue to serve as the living room of our campus, a place for gathering, studying and growing together as a community.”

Some aspects of the building remain closed, including the MSU Union Food Court. Officials have not provided information on when it may reopen.

A lone gunman targeted students at the Union and Berkey Hall during a Feb. 13 rampage that killed three students and critically wounded five.

University officials announced last week that the Union would open on Monday. Berkey Hall, the other building involved in the incident, is to remain closed through the end of 2023. Officials had previously announced that the academic building would remain closed through the end of the current spring semester.
