Michigan teen killed after snowmobile falls through ice in U.P.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A teenager has died after a snowmobile fell through ice Wednesday in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Michigan State Police told News 8 sister station WJMN-TV that the first call for help came around 6:35 p.m. Wednesday. The caller said a snowmobile fell through the ice about a mile off of the shore of Indian Lake near Manistique in Schoolcraft County.

Investigators say two teen boys were on the snowmobile when it fell. Two family members at the scene also ended up in the lake while trying to rescue the two boys.

First responders from several local departments rushed to the scene, including Manistique Public Safety, the Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Natural Resources. Two adults and one of the teens were pulled from the water and taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital to be treated for hypothermia. They have since been released.

A dive team from the Delta County Sheriff’s Office recovered the other teen’s body at approximately 1 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators have not released the name of the victim, but News 8 affiliate WLUC-TV identified him as a 15-year-old boy. The Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning on its Facebook page to urge people to stay off of Indian Lake and pay close attention to ice conditions.

“There is lots of open water and several sections of broken ice across the lake due to rescue hovercraft damage. Everyone is urged to stay off the ice. Please use extreme caution on all other lakes as weather conditions are not conducive to good ice,” the warning stated.
