Michigan's most searched dog breeds per city: Cane corso is tops in Detroit

The common phrase stating a dog is a person’s best friend couldn’t be more accurate. The fluffy and loving creatures can make a good addition to any home, providing a sense of companionship.

However, some breeds are more sought after than others. According to research, six out of seven major cities in Michigan have cane corso as the most "popular" dog. The muscular canines, which weigh more than 100 pounds, are known for being excellent guard dogs.

Detroit

According to a news release from MyPetChild, the most searched dog breeds in Detroit were a cane corso, French bulldog and Rottweiler.

Cane corso dogs are smart, trainable and protective animals with a lineage dating to ancient Rome, according to the American Kennel Club. The breed’s name in Latin translates to “bodyguard” which suits the short coat and muscular build of the breed. They have an average life expectancy of 10-12 years.

A spokesperson said in the news release that cane corsi are commonly searched for across America, but it may be because of the negative perceptions associated with them.

“Overall, across 328 major US cities, the most searched for dog breed was found to be the Cane Corso, which came out top in 297 of the cities, the equivalent of 91% of cities overall,” said the news release. “Unfortunately, this Italian mastiff has garnered somewhat of a negative reputation and their popularity online might partly be attributed to those looking for a dog that can deter home intruders. In reality, the breed can be very affectionate and gentle and make for great family pets when properly socialized and handled.”
