Micro Center computer store to open in Castleton in former Gander Outdoors building

Micro Center, an Ohio-based computer store, will open an Indianapolis location in Castleton this summer.

Micro Center will move into around 35,000 of the 55,000-square-foot building at 5702 E. 86th St., formerly occupied by Gander Outdoors. The remaining 20,000 square feet is still up for lease, Keith Stark, CEO of ConsortiumCRE, told IndyStar. ConsortiumCRE, a local real estate brokerage firm, is handling the leasing for the building.

The company was known as Gander Mountain until it was purchased by Camping World in 2017. Gander Outdoors opened its Castleton location in February 2018, but closed in 2019 and has been vacant ever since, Stark said. The reason for Gander Outdoors' closure, Stark said, was because the shopping center location limited the retailer from selling RVs and other equipment that would require a larger space.

Micro Center specializes in computers and computer parts, as well as gaming and software. The store also offers repair services. The retailer operates 25 stores across the U.S.

The store is expected to open late July or early August, Stark said.

The computer retailer is expanding after the closure of Fry's Electronics, which went out of business and closed its Fishers location due to pandemic-related challenges in 2021. Stark said Micro Center is hoping to fill a hole in the market for computer parts.

Stark estimated that the store would hire between 50 to 75 employees. Micro Center posted a job listing for a general manager position on its website.

"They have highly trained people that know computers and can answer questions and build a foundation on customer service and knowledge, which is kind of hard to find in the retail environment these days." Stark said.
