New microbrewery, free lunches for those in need and more in Evansville-area food news

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — We're bringing you Tri-State restaurant happenings and food news you need to know. Here's the latest.

Flora June’s Scoop Shoppe in Fort Branch is hosting an ice cream social on Sunday, June 14 from 1-4 p.m. to benefit the building or renovation of an Addiction Solutions Women's Recovery House. Have ice cream and enjoy games, raffles, live music, and other family-friendly fun.

The Kant Brewing Co. is the area's newest microbrewery.  It's in Fort Branch, just a quick drive up U.S. 41, and is open on Saturday and Sunday, from noon until 8 p.m. or until the beer runs out.

The Queen B’s Cuisine truck plans to once again offer free Wednesday lunches during the summer in neighborhoods where kids and families are in need. Dates and locations will be announced soon. This effort relies on donations of dollars and volunteer hours. Donate or inquire by messaging the Facebook page at facebook.com/QueenBsCuisineLLC or by calling 812-470-0634.

The Rooster’s Den Comfort Food Restaurant is a new Newburgh business going into the former Burger King building just off Indiana 66. The menu is described on social media as "down home good cooking." An opening date has not yet been announced.

The Rooster's Den will be at 3988 Haley Drive, Newburgh, Indiana.

Sassafras restaurant is now open in Owensboro. This unique spot is upscale, all scratch and hyper-local featuring ingredients from Kentucky and the nearby region in dishes such as ratatouille and braised beef short ribs over grits, smoked pork and creative sandwiches. The restaurant t is reservation-only for the time being.

Steve's Oink-N-Squeel Barbecue Sauce, a local Evansville favorite, will soon have a barbecue truck. We'll announce when it is serving. In the meantime, purchase Oink-N-Squeel original or habanero sauces at local stores or enjoy it on the Filthy Rich sandwich with smoked pork, candied bacon, caramelized onion, and mac 'n cheese on Texas toast at Bud's Rockin' Country Bar & Grill.

Thomason's Barbecue in Henderson will be partnering with the Ky. Bourbon Festival for the first Bourbon Capital BBQ Challenge & Distillery Invitational on Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11, in Gethsamane, Kentucky, which is roughly 2.5 hours from Evansville or Henderson.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 17 and under. This is a family friendly event. There will be live entertainment, bouncy houses, and plenty of barbecue food trucks and Bourbon for all.

The Bourbon Capital BBQ Challenge will be at the Dant Crossing Bed and Breakfast at 225 Dee Head Road, Gethsamane.

Trickey's Brews and Bevs in Boonville is, just in time for summer, now carrying Lolly's Pops, Evansville-made artisan fruit and dairy frozen ice pops. Flavors may change but look for cookies + cream, strawberry lemonade, mango lime, passionfruit pineapple and more.
