Microsoft’s iPad mini rival reportedly back on track for a summer launch

Microsoft: Don’t expect any more major updates until Windows 9

Has Microsoft finally found the key differentiated functionality that will make its Surface mini tablet a hit? According to earlier reports, Microsoft cancelled plans to unveil its smaller Surface tablet at the last minute this past May when the realization set in that consumers likely would have no reason to purchase the Windows RT slate over the similarly sized iPad mini or Android tablets. According to a new report, however, plans to launch the Surface mini are now back on.

Well-known gadget leaker @evleaks takes a break from posting marketing renders from time to time to share information about upcoming device launches, and he did just that on Monday. According to a post on his blog, Microsoft’s Surface mini is currently back in production ahead of a possible launch sometime this summer.

No other information was provided in the post, but @evleaks’s solid track record suggests Microsoft’s smaller Surface tablet could indeed be released in the next couple of months.
