Microsoft to unplug Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer - the web browser once so dominant that it was at the heart of a huge U.S. antitrust case - will become history.
It was once ubiquitous, pre-installed on billions of computers that ran the Microsoft Windows operating system.
But in a blog post on Wednesday, Microsoft said it would retire the IE desktop application in June 2022, for certain version of Windows. It said it would focus on its slicker Edge browser.
In the last two decades the software titan watched Google Chrome dominate. One web analytics firm says Chrome now commands 65% of the market, followed by Apple’s Safari at 18 percent. Microsoft Edge holds a small, 3% slice of the pie.
It’s a faster, more secure browser than Internet Explorer. Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome.
