Mid-Columbia sends 38 swimmers to state finals + CBC fall sports teams prep for playoffs

Every fall sports team at Columbia Basin College is doing it again.

Just like last year — when the Hawks men’s soccer team placed first, the volleyball finished second, and the women’s soccer team ended up third — CBC has all of its teams in the playoffs.

Martin Ramirez has his men’s soccer team in the NWAC Final 4, which has its semifinals on Friday, Nov. 10, at the Starfire Stadium in Tukwila.

CBC (15-1-1) will take on Peninsula (12-4-1) in a 1:30 p.m. semifinal. Highline (15-1-2) played Rogue (13-3-1) in the other semifinal at 11 a.m.

The championship is set for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Last Saturday, Nov. 4, CBC beat Everett 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

Rafael Lucio (Las Vegas) and Gabriel Delgado (Southridge) scored goals in the second half to claim the victory for the Hawks.

NWAC women’s soccer

The Hawks had to get through both the first round and quarterfinals to advance.

CBC beat Chemeketa 2-1 last Saturday in the quarterfinals on the road, as Sierra Larios (Chiawana) scored 3 minutes and 47 seconds into the match.

Angelina Keister (Southridge) added a goal in the 41st minute to give the Hawks an insurmountable 2-0 lead.

Chiawana grad Emma Haertling scored two goals within an 8-minute period of the first half to lead CBC over Pierce College 2-0 on Nov. 1 in Pasco in the first round of the tournament.

In the 20th minute, Haertling took a pass from Janelly Verduzco (Othello) to score the first goal.

At the 28-minute mark, Madisyn Joyner (Hanford) sent a pass to Haertling for the second goal and the win.

The Hawks defense was outstanding, not allowing Pierce a single shot on goal in the match.

So now, CBC (15-1-3) plays Lower Columbia (13-4-2) in a 4 p.m. semifinal on Friday, Nov. 10, at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila.

Peninsula (16-0-2) takes on Spokane (12-2-4) in the other semifinal, at 6:30 p.m.

The winners will me at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Starfire for the NWAC title.

NWAC volleyball

CBC finished fourth in the NWAC East region, and the Hawks qualified for one of the four regional tournaments.

They’ll be at Bellevue for the four-team tournament that runs this coming Saturday and Sunday. The top two teams will qualify for the Elite 8 tournament, which will be held Nov. 17-19 at Pierce College in Lakewood.

Here are Saturday’s first-round matchups: Game 1, Pierce (12-18) vs. Rogue (17-7), 10 a.m.; Game 2, CBC (17-12) vs. Bellevue (26-4), 1 p.m.; Game 3, loser 1 vs. loser 2 (loser out), 30 minutes after Game 2 ends.

On Sunday, the winners of Games 1 and 2 meet for the championship and a berth into the Elite 8. That match starts at 10 a.m.

The loser of the title match will then meet the winner of Game 3 30 minutes after Sunday’s title game for the second Elite 8 berth.
