Mid-Southerners find ways to chill out during heat wave

As heat advisories and warnings take effect across the Mid-South, times like this may have you longing for the chilly relief of winter.

FOX13 found one place in the Mid-South where you can put yourself on ice all year round.

The members of First Student Church with First Assembly in Memphis decided to cool off at the Mid-South Ice House in Olive Branch Tuesday.

”This is a great way to beat the heat. It’s cool, and it’s actually very cold. It’s a wonderful place to stay cool and have fun,” said Amond Steinbach of Memphis.

The church youth group goes somewhere every Tuesday during the summer.

Isaac Gaskins told FOX13 that he had never ice skated before but loved it.

”Way back in third grade, I roller skated all the time, and that’s how I got good at this,” Gaskins said.

Things were so chill that some of the kids, like 12-year-old Todd White, wished they had dressed warmer.

FOX13 asked White what he would wear if he visited the Ice House again. “Probably 12 sweatshirts,” he said.

About 30 minutes away, unfrozen water provided relief for Ed White and his granddaughter at the Spray Park at W.C. Johnson Park in Collierville.

Three-year-old Kira was enjoying every bit of it.

”We decided to get out of the house and get a little cool water on us,” Ed White said.

But at some point, it will be time to go back inside to cool off and get out of the sun.

“Probably in another hour, the sun might make us come in regardless of this water,” White said.
