MidAmerica Nazarene lineman Myzelle Law dies at 19: ‘A life taken so young is devastating’

Myzelle Law, a student at MidAmerica Nazarene and member of the football team, died Sunday at age 19, according to an announcement from MNU athletics on Monday.

According to a GoFundMe created for his medical and funeral costs, Law “sustained heat-related injuries ... and was rushed to Overland Park Regional Medical Center” on Saturday, July 22. The GoFundMe will also support “a foundation/Scholarship in Myzelle’s honor moving forward.”

Before joining MNU, Law, an Overland Park native, played football at Blue Valley North High School. Law earned a football scholarship to MidAmerica Nazarene and committed to the Pioneers in 2022.

Law was entering his sophomore season as a defensive lineman. He was known for his talent on the field and his kind nature off it.

“A life taken so young is devastating,” MNU Director of Athletics Todd Garrett said in a release. “This young man was truly special. Our thoughts and support go out to his family, friends and fellow students.”

MNU President David Spittal added, “The university community is saddened and grieving the news of Myzelle’s passing. We believe God’s love has embraced him even as we mourn his loss. We extend our condolences and continued prayers to his family, friends and teammates.”

MNU head coach Paul Hansen said he and his coaching staff were devastated by the news, per the release.

“Myzelle was very much loved by the team, coaches and everyone who knew him,” Hansen said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this extremely difficult time.”

As mentioned, family friends of Law established a GoFundMe link for those who want to aid his family with the medical and funeral costs.

“This world was blessed to have had 19 years with Myzelle, and he leaves us all better just by knowing him,” read the GoFundMe’s description. (As of 7 p.m. on Monday, it was $16 short of its $30,000 goal). ”Myzelle touched so many people with his large presence, which could only be matched by his enormous heart. His infectious smile and laughter could fill a room. To know him meant you knew the true meaning of love and humility.”

MidAmerica Nazarene plans to announce the family’s arrangements as soon as they are available.
