Midday fire at McDonald's in Millis forces temporary closure of restaurant

MILLIS — There will be no Big Macs or Chicken McNuggets available on Main Street for awhile after a fire Tuesday forced the closure of a McDonald's Restaurant.

All food will have to be disposed of after the 11:30 a.m. fire at the 808 Main St. (Route 109) restaurant, Fire Chief Rick Barrett said.

"As for the food, any time the Ansul suppression system is activated or there is a fire/smoke, any food that is in the kitchen must be disposed of," Barrett said. "The Board of Health is working directly with them on this matter."

Firefighters responded to McDonald's at about 11:30 a.m. after a 911 call reporting the fire. Upon arrival, there was heavy smoke and fire showing from a vent on the roof, the chief said.

"Initial reports were there was a fire in a fryolator that had extended into the ventilation system," Barrett said.

Firefighters activated the restaurant's suppression system to help extinguish the blaze, while others went on the roof to ensure the fire didn't spread.

The fire did not spread to the roof, Barrett said.

Along with Millis, firefighters from Medfield, Medway and Norfolk assisted, as well as an ambulance from Westwood.

Nobody was hurt.

The Board of Health, the town Building Department, Eversource and a supervisor from McDonald's corporate team were all at the scene, Barrett said. He estimated the fire, which was contained to the ventilation system, caused about $10,000 worth of damage.

"The restaurant was closed and will remain closed (until) further notice," the chief said.
