Male pedestrian struck and killed by semi on I-77 in Green identified

A semi tractor-trailer struck and killed a man on Interstate 77 near Massillon Road early Sunday morning, according to the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday near the 118-mile marker on I-77 in Green.

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as William Martin, 49, of Springfield Township. The Green Fire Department took Martin to Summa Akron City Hospital, where was pronounced dead in the emergency department.

The sheriff's office said the man walked into the southbound lanes of 77 and was subsequently struck by the semi.

The driver of the semi wasn't injured. No charges have been filed as of Monday morning, and the crash remains under investigation by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
