Middletown Volunteer Honored For Sewing More Than 1,000 Masks

MIDDLETOWN, CT – A Middletown resident has been awarded the Senior Citizen of the Year Award for her selfless work giving back to the community during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mayor Ben Florsheim presented the award to Mary Ann Bergeron on Thursday and proclaimed Friday to be Mary Ann Bergeron Day in Middletown.

"Mary Ann is the consummate volunteer – always asking herself how she can help; never worry about who gets the credit," Florsheim wrote on Facebook.

According to Florsheim, Bergeron typically uses her sewing skills to create blankets, pillows and clothing to donate in support of new moms and young families, but this year she put her sewing skills to the test and produced more than 1,000 reusable masks for Middletown residents.

"Mary Ann, you are a deserving recipient of this award," Florsheim wrote. "Thank you for all you do for the Senior Center and this entire community!"
