Midgets remain unbeaten against North Dakota competition

Jan. 29—After four competitions away from home, the Dickinson gymnastics team returned home to host an invite, with the season winding down.

Five schools competed at Dickinson High School Saturday afternoon. Bismarck High, Legacy, and Century, along with Mandan, made the trip west for the meet.

Coming in, the Midgets had yet to lose a meet in North Dakota. They traveled to South Dakota for an invite on Jan. 8, where they finished third.

The six-time defending state champions continued their dominance, taking first place as a team and in all five events. They finished with a team score of 150.000. Century came in second with 137.775 and Legacy rounded out the top three with 134.850.

Three different Dickinson gymnasts took first place. Elizabeth Karsky took home first place on the uneven bars (9.650) and vault (9.600). Rylee Olson won the floor exercise (9.750), narrowly finishing above her teammate Addison Fitterer (9.725).

Fitterer would have the upper hand on the field on the balance beam (9.725) and all-around competition (37.425), taking first in both. Her performances on the balance beam and floor exercise ultimately powered her all-around score, finishing fifth (9.075) on the uneven bars and tenth (8.900) on the vault.

Amy Fridley came in second for all-around (37.100) despite not winning any of the four other events. She was top three on the balance beam (9.625), uneven bars (9.150), and floor exercise (9.325), and in a four-way tie for fourth on the vault (9.000).

The Midgets swept the floor exercise as well as the all-around competition for the top eight. Out of all the top eight finishers in each event, only six places were held by non-Dickinson gymnasts. Places 4 through 8 on the balance beam were occupied by Century or Legacy.

Century's Jenna Jackson and Mandan's Jericah Lockner had the highest non-Dickinson finish, with both coming in fifth on the balance beam and vault, respectively.

The floor exercise was the Midgets best event, accounting for the top ten scores.

With just under a month left in the season, Dickinson look poised to take home yet another state championship, this time coming on their home floor. The state tournament will be held in Dickinson on February 25 and 26.
