From Midori to Buddy Guy to Ian Flanigan, live music in August in the mid-Hudson Valley

There's a lot of summer still to savor as August approaches, and that means live music. From chamber orchestras to jazz festivals, live blues to rock shows at the Ulster County Fair, here are some performances to put on your calendar:

Shandelee Music Festival: Midori, Gramercy Brass, Aug. 6-20

SMF celebrates its 29th season with two-weeks of world class music beginning Aug. 6 with “An Evening of Chamber Music,” featuring a performance by the Gramercy Brass Orchestra. The concert will showcase the music of Sir Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame), Meredith Willson (composer of The Music Man), legendary composer John Williams (Star Wars, Superman, ET, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, etc.) and more.

Violinist Midori will perform Aug. 9 and 10. Midori made her concert debut with the New York Philharmonic at age 11 under conductor Zubin Mehta. “An Evening of Violin” will feature the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, John Zorn, Thierry Escaich, Jessie Montgomery and Annie Gosfield. Tickets for the Aug. 9 concert are $35 for adults, $10 for students 17 and under. The Aug. 10 concert will be free for all students 12 – 18 years old, and students will be able to meet and greet Midori after the performance. Other tickets for this show are $35 for adults. All performances begin at 8 p.m., in the Sunset Concert Pavilion, 442 J. Young Road, Livingston Manor. Advanced reservations are requested. Call 845-439-3277 or purchase online. The fair, held each year at the Ulster County Fairgrounds in New Paltz, always has a roster of live performances. Here is the 2022 schedule. Saugerties native and "The Voice" contestant Ian Flanigan is the headliner. The Fairgrounds are at 249 Libertyville Road. Blues rock great and five-time Grammy nominee Kenny Wayne Shepherd will perform alongside blues legend Buddy Guy and young blues sensation, and recent Grammy winner Christone “Kingfish” Ingram at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. 6 p.m. show. Oz Noy, Hudson Valley Jazzfest, Aug. 18-21

This four day series celebrates jazz with performances in multiple towns and environments, from cafes to libraries, restaurants, public spaces, parks, performing arts centers, libraries, clubs and art galleries in Warwick, Greenwood Lake, Sugar Loaf, Port Jervis, New Paltz, Kingston, Woodstock and Port Chester. Among the highlights: International recording artist Oz Noy, with drummer Anton Fig from the former David Letterman band, and organist, Jerry Z, on Warwick's Railroad Avenue, Aug 20 at 7:30 p.m. On Aug 19,  Latin Jazz Siete will perform a free concert in Lewis Park, Main St. in Warwick at 6:30 p.m. Many concerts are free or with minimum tickets or food and drink. Yevgeny Kutik, Maverick Concerts, Aug. 27

Violinist Kutik will make his Maverick Concerts debut as part of its annual chamber orchestra concert, at 6 p.m. He will be the featured soloist alongside the Caroga Arts Ensemble, led by Music Director Alexander Platt. The evening’s program will feature an assortment of musical works spanning the 20th century, including Shostakovich’s Sonata for violin, strings and percussion, Op.134, arranged by Mikhail Zinman and Andrei Pushkarev (1968). The performance will also include Alan Shulman’s Theme and Variations, for Viola, Strings and Harp (1940); Gustav Mahler’s Adagietto from the Symphony No. 5 (1902); and Ernest Bloch’s Concerto Grosso No.1 (1925). Tickets are students: $10; indoors Tier 1: $45; Tier 2: $27.50; Tier 3: $24.00. Outdoors: $20.00 (benches but uncovered).
