We here at GOBankingRates want to help get our nation’s small businesses back on their feet after the COVID-19 pandemic. To do that, we’re highlighting readers’ favorite small businesses around the country, and shining a spotlight on what makes them special to their customers and their towns.

In this edition of our Small Business Spotlight series, we’re featuring Soap Junkii, a small batch bath and body company based in Chicago. Founder Quinneidrah Taylor specializes in creating 100% handmade products such as soap, body butters and infused oils for all skin types, and also offers soap-making workshops. Here, we discuss how her daughter’s eczema inspired her to become an entrepreneur, the importance of having your financials in order when running a small business and how she made the most of slower business months during the pandemic.

Was there a particular moment or experience that inspired you to start your business?

I started the company with my daughter in mind. She was suffering from eczema and I couldn’t find the right products to help her, so I started making my own. Eventually, I was able to formulate a recipe that helped her and others alike.

What did you take from past experiences or jobs that you knew you wanted to be a part of your new business?

My past employer was a small business owner as well. He made sure that his financials were in order which made his foundation strong, and the end result was that he was able to grow his business with ease. I learned a lot from him and I hope to carry over that aspect.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of being a business owner?

I am able to create my own schedule and can also spend more time with my family.

How has the pandemic affected your business?

Business was slow in the beginning because I wasn’t able to attend events to sell my products as usual, but once the city started opening up, it got better. I was also able to focus more on marketing and updating my skills with different online classes. I took advantage of the time and learned new skills to complement my products.

Be patient with the process and record everything. That way you can go back and make it better.
