Although the small liberal arts college in Central Kentucky likely won't apply for Ivy League membership anytime soon, it ranks among the elite schools in the country, according to Money's Best Colleges in America list for 2023.

Berea was the lone Kentucky school and one of just eight in the South to receive a 5-star rating, joining national powerhouses including Brown, Duke and Princeton as one of the 34 to receive highest honors.

The Christian school, known for not charging tuition in exchange for work-study, was lauded in its summary on the list for affordability. Berea, which had just under 1,500 students in 2021, has topped Money's affordability rankings for two consecutive years.

Money redesigned its analysis for this year's list of places "where your tuition (and time) is likely to pay off."

The publication's methodology weighted 30% to quality of education, 40% to affordability and 30% to student outcomes.

Seven other Kentucky schools made the list. The University of Louisville and Western Kentucky University were not included. :
