Mike gets his own parenting moment in the third episode of ‘Monsters at Work’

Doors, damaged rooms, and deeply cute babies abound in the third installment of Monsters at Work. The third episode of the children’s series takes a break from the pacing of the first two episodes, allowing the characters to settle into their new roles and developing the relationships from the first few episodes.
Delightfully, Billy Crystal continues to feature heavily from episode to episode, as Sulley and Mike grow into their roles as leaders (and parental figures). Val and Tylor get some quality time, and we get to see a little more of the society of Monstropolis as Mike and Sulley venture out from within the walls of Monsters, Incorporated.

What happens in the third episode of ‘Monsters at Work’?
The third episode of Monsters at Work, titled “The Damaged Room,” shifts focus throughout the episode from Mike and Sulley’s buddy-comedy parenting struggles to the employees of MIFT. The first few moments take viewers back to one of the first scenes from the original film, as Phlegm, the initial monster that attempted to scare a child in a simulation, repeats his performance for a baby for comedic effect. In the process, he accidentally sneezes, causing acid to splash up against and erode part of the wall of the baby’s room. Terrified, he flees, and alerts those on the Laugh Floor that there’s a 418, or a damaged room.
In the MIFT offices, Fritz is busy playing games when the call comes in to repair the damaged room. Val continues to attempt to remind Tylor of their time together at MU, which Tylor denies remembering, before Val and Tylor get called in to help out with the 418. While trying to repair the room, the sleeping baby poses a problem, and Val and Tylor leave the room and bring their woes to Sulley and Mike. After some arguing about the last child to enter Monstropolis, Mike decides to take care of the child, under the assumption that, unlike Sulley, Mike is immune to the child’s cuteness. Mike retrieves the baby and takes her with him, very much in denial about how adorable the child is.
Val and Tylor and the rest of the MIFT team move in to tackle the damaged room. They work to remain as quiet as possible while making repairs, as Val stands guard. Meanwhile, Mike babysits. Sulley comes into his office and nearly wakes the baby, who Mike has nicknamed Snore. Sulley lets Mike know that he has tickets to a Monstropolis Creepies baseball game, and Mike develops a plan in order to bring Snore to the game.
Back in the damaged room, Duncan mysteriously appears, intending to keep an eye on the rest of the MIFT employees. At the Monstropolis Creepies game, an irate fan for the opposite team, the Red Shocks, wakes Snore, who is given a ‘rotdog’ in order to calm down. Mike and Sulley have yet another argument about Mike’s parenting skills. In Snore’s room, the repairs are nearly done, and Cutter leaves to take her lunch break, accidentally trapping Duncan, Val, and Tylor within the room. Tylor trips, inviting the parents’ notice, and the monsters are forced to hide.
At the baseball game, Mike misses a play in order to change the baby. Mike and Sulley continue to disagree about their roles in their relationship. The Red Shocks fan bothers Snore, and Mike finally fights back, yelling at the fan. In his panic as the fan yells at him, Mike sings another song to the tune of ‘put that thing back where it came from or so help me.’ He threatens to fight the angry fan, and a baseball flies into the stands and strikes the fan, saving Mike.
In order to fool the parents, Duncan speaks from the crib, informing the parents that he’s okay. Amazed, proud of their parental success, Snore’s parents leave. As the monsters continue trying to escape, Val reveals that she’s only been mentioning that she and Tylor share college memories because he was one of the only monsters that ever spoke to her. When Cutter turns the door back on, Mike puts Snore back where she came from, singing to her when she gets distressed in her sleep.
After they successfully escape the room, Tylor tells Val that he remembers her introduction to him in college, repeating her words back to her. Val, reassured that they are, in fact, college buds, announces that now they’re work buds, too. They drive off in their maintenance cart together.
Midway through the credits at the episode’s end, we get another installment of “Mike’s Comedy Class,” which features a demonstration of a whoopie cushion.
While more low-key than the first episodes of the series, “The Damaged Room” sets up a lot of the relationships between the MIFT members, and it’s likely that we’ll see more of Val and Tylor’s budding friendship as the series moves forward.
