Mike Groh: 3 things to know about new NY Giants wide receivers coach

The New York Giants are hiring Mike Groh to be their wide receivers coach on Brian Daboll's staff, two individuals with knowledge of the situation told NorthJersey.com and USA TODAY Network on Thursday afternoon.

Groh, 50, was most recently the wide receivers coach under Frank Reich with the Indianapolis Colts. Here are three things to know about the New Jersey native's return home:

1. The resume

Groh followed Reich to Indianapolis, but previously served as the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles under Doug Pederson. He was also the Eagles' wide receivers coach when they won the Super Bowl.

He has 21 years of coaching experience, including nine seasons in the NFL, the last two with the Colts. Groh has also an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Rams, Chicago Bears and the Jets. He is a former starting quarterback at the University of Virginia.

Giants fans should certainly be familiar with the last name Groh.

His father Al joined the Giants' coaching staff under Bill Parcells and served as the Giants' linebackers coach in 1989 and 1990, including Big Blue's Super Bowl XXV season. He was also defensive coordinator in 1991.

Al Groh was also very close to Bill Belichick, who hired him as an assistant with the Cleveland Browns in 1992. Groh then reunited with Parcells in New England from 1993 to 1996 as the defensive coordinator and then followed him to the Jets.

Al Groh served as head coach of the New York Jets for the 2000 season, resigning after one year to pursue the job at his alma mater, University of Virginia, which is where Mike played his college ball as well.

3. Glory days

Groh attended Randolph High School and played in one of the greatest State championship games in New Jersey history. He was the quarterback, safety, placekicker and punter for Randolph, and he kicked the game-winning field goal to beat Montclair and win the 1990 North 2, Group 4 sectional title.

His 37-yard kick with one second on the clock gave Randolph the championship and extended its winning streak to 48 games.

Coincidently, two months later, Al Groh and the Giants won the Super Bowl when a last second kick by the Bills' Scott Norwood infamously sailed wide right.
