Mike Pompeo, who has called for more seriousness in GOP leadership, is not entering the 2024 presidential race. The former Trump-administration secretary of state made the announcement on Friday.

“This isn’t our moment,” Pompeo said of his and his wife’s decision on Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier. “This isn’t the time for us to seek elected office.”

Pompeo also issued a statement alongside his PAC, Champion American Values.

“Susan and I have concluded, after much consideration and prayer, that I will not present myself as a candidate to become President of the United States in the 2024 election,” he said.

Pompeo, who also previously served as a U.S. representative, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and a soldier in the U.S. military, said the decision is a matter of timing for him and his family. Many people encouraged him to seek the office, and many others warned him about its drawbacks, he said. His presidential platform, had he pursued candidacy, would have focused on defending the nation’s values and the principles of American exceptionalism, he suggested.

“For now, Susan and I have concluded that we can best serve in roles we’ve been in before — as parents, Sunday school teachers, community leaders, and business leaders,” Pompeo said. “There remains much to do and the conservative cause is worthy. This nation has given me more than I deserve — unimaginable opportunities. My duty to return that blessing to others remains and with His help I will fulfill that obligation.”

Pompeo made a heartfelt petition to supporters to pray not for his but for the country’s future. As a 59-year-old, he teased that he might consider launching a presidential bid down the road. “There remain many more opportunities for which the timing might be more fitting as presidential leadership becomes even more necessary,” he said.

In addition to former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, former vice president Mike Pence, and others, Pompeo was considered among the potential 2024 Republican contenders before he chose not to throw his hat into the ring.
