Mike Rowe highlights Pueblo in 'How America Works' filmed at GCC cement plant

An explosive episode of “How America Works with Mike Rowe” is coming to FOX Business Oct. 31, thanks to the efforts of workers at the GCC Rio Grande Cement Plant in Pueblo.

The explosive element came during the filming of a dynamite blast at the quarry, said Alex Alarcon, GCC plant manager.

FOX camera crew members spent nearly a week and a half filming at the plant at 3372 Lime Road, getting footage of everything from plant’s massive kiln being fired up, to the shipping area where railroad cars are loaded with cement, to the mobilization and maintenance of large pieces of equipment, Alarcon said.

As many as six Pueblo employees are featured in the episode, Alarcon said.

“It was a really exciting experience for our employees here to be filmed during their daily duties. The show also goes beyond the daily operation and looks at production capacity and shares technical information like that,” Alarcon, who got a sneak preview, said.

GCC crews keep the plant open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The plant opened in 2008 and employs 84 workers as well as a couple dozen corporate employees.

“We have a huge economic impact locally, not only through jobs but our many vendors and customers," Alarcon said. "We are fulfilling construction needs for cement as far north as Minneapolis, east to Kansas, west to Salt Lake City and throughout Colorado."

Local television viewers may well remember Rowe from his comedic approach to “Dirty Jobs” on the Discovery Channel. This time, he’s profiling “hard-working Americans who grow our food, build our homes, tend to our infrastructure, fight our fires, keep our lights on and look after the many complicated systems that keep civilized life from going off the rails,” Rowe said.

The Pueblo episode focuses on cement as the second-most used resource after water and shows how “the workers of GCC simply can’t make it fast enough,” said Ben Zabel of the FOX Business network.

"How America Works" is now in its third season. The episode featuring Pueblo's cement plant will air at 7 p.m., Oct. 31.

“You’ll meet a new group of essential workers. Many of whom labor out of sight and out of mind,” Rowe said.

In fact, Alarcon said the plant’s workers were considered essential throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, noting “we don’t know how to do cement from home.”

“You’ll marvel at their skill, tenacity, work ethic and commitment to get the job done. You’ll also see first-hand what a profound impact they have on every aspect of your daily life,” Rowe explained. “This season is a tip of the hat to those who understand that not all knowledge comes from college. Oftentimes, the most valuable education is found on the job site."
