No athlete has led off this blog more than Loras College graduate student Kassie Parker. And with good reason. The former Clayton Ridge (Guttenberg) prep star continues to rack up NCAA Division III titles and smash records in that division. And Parker did it again last week to lead off this edition of the WEEKEND UPDATE of the best performances by Iowa-based collegiate and postcollegiate distance runners and triathletes.

Parker broke her own NCAA Division III outdoor 10,000-meter record by placing an outstanding eighth overall in the fastest section 1 at the Stanford Invitational on Friday in Palo Alto, Calif. Parker ran 32:36.22 to crush her previous 10K record, also set at Stanford on April 1, 2022, by more than 27 seconds. Parker was competing against a field of top NCAA Division I and unattached athletes and was the only Division III athlete in the race.

"It's very special just knowing I knew the time I could do," Parker told RunnerSpace.com. "I gave it my all. The last two miles I got this cramp. I just want to keep getting faster. Even after breaking 33, it's like, what is next?' "

Parker, a two-time NCAA Division III cross country champion and a three-time NCAA champion in track and field, had set the division best for 10K of 33:03.61. The closest woman to her in the record books is Mary Proulx of Keene State (33:21.80).

Parker also owns the all-conditions Division III record for 5,000 indoors - a 15:58.58 effort run at Iowa State a year ago. Parker was out of eligibility for the recent indoor track season. Parker also set the NCAA Division III course record of 20:11.1 while winning her first NCAA cross country title in November of 2021 in Louisville, Ky.

Not having indoors kind of helped with this race," Parker told RunnerSpace.com. "Having that training block, building up my mileage, doing more workouts. I felt really prepared for this race. Everything fell into place.

In that section 1 Friday, Syracuse University senior Amanda Vestri finished third overall in 32:08.26. The former Iowa State All-American from Webster, N.Y., ran the 16th-fastest time in NCAA history. Vestri fell just 1.20 seconds off Paige Stoner's school record from 2019. Utah's Emily Venters (31:48.35) ran the sixth-fastest time in NCAA history while taking the victory.

Will move back to track and field soon, but a former Iowa State All-American and two-time Olympian Hillary Bor broke a 40-year-old American record while capturing runner-up honors at the 50th Cherry Blossom 10 Mile race in Washington, D.C., on Sunday. The HOKA runner covered the course in 46:11 to top Greg Meyer's mark of 46:13 from 40 years ago and win the USATF 10 Mile National Championships title. The resident of Colorado Springs, Colo., trailed only Ethiopian and overall champion Tsegay Kidanu, who ran 46:08. The record is pending ratification from the USATF Records Committee.

Bor claimed $59,000 in prize money and bonuses for his effort at the race known for the cherry blossom trees that line the route.

"I just put my head down and just grind, and grind, and grind," Bor told Race Results Weekly.

Bor, in repeating as USATF 10 Mile champion, separated himself from former Sioux City North and Iowa Central Community College star Biya Simbassa just before the 10K split. Bor now leads the USATF Running Circuit standings with 33 total points. Simbassa, the 2021 USATF Running Circuit champion, finished third overall in 47:09. The Under Armour athlete is based in Flagstaff, Ariz., now.

Runablaze Iowa's Cody Baele surged to a 13th-place finish in 48:56, a time that puts him second in club history. Baele, who lives in Des Moines, was the ninth-best American. He trails only former Drake University and Boone High standout Brogan Austin's 47:57 time from 2018.

Placing 15th overall and the 11th-best American was former Iowa State runner Tyler Jermann of the Minnesota Distance Elite. Jermann, 30, of St. Paul, Minn., ran 49:19.
