MIles honored at HOF banquet

May 2—INDIANAPOLIS — On Saturday, the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame honored its Silver Anniversary team at Primo's Banquet Hall in Indianapolis. Among those honored was current Washington coach and former Hatchet standout Gretchen Miles.

Individuals selected for the Silver Anniversary Team are recognized as outstanding high school senior basketball players from 25 years ago. Eligibility for the Silver Anniversary Team is only in the 25th year after graduation (1997).

"I am very humbled and thankful to the Hall of Fame committee for this honor. You definitely do not get anywhere in life without people sacrificing and helping you along the way. For me, the top two people were my parents. This award is definitely their award. No way I would be where I am or who I am without them. I have been fortunate to have many great coaches that were phenomenal role models, our current staff, who makes me better every day, and our family. My brother keeps me in check and is a huge supporter, and I was very honored to have family from my mom and dad's side, past coaches, and current coaching staff at the banquet. The people I have surrounded myself with over the years have made me better, challenged me daily, and continue to help me grow. It was an honor to be surrounded by highly successful people who are continuing to make a difference," said Miles.

She graduated second in school history with 1,588 career points and 625 assists, while setting school records in games played (98), career 3FG made (223), career FT% (.793) and season 3FG made (86). Miles averaged 21.7 point and 5.4 assists as junior and 20.7 points and 7.2 assists as senior as part of teams that went 89-9, winning four conference titles, four sectional titles, four regional championships and reached the 1995 state finals. She was a 1996 Indiana Junior All-Star, ICGSA all-state.

She currently has 218 wins as the Hatchet head coach with a pair of sectional titles.

Her former head coach Steve Brothers is very proud of her both as a coach and former player.

"Any accolades that Gretchen receives are well deserved. She was 89-9 as a player and her 223 3-pointers have to be near the top of the state.

"When I was still coaching, she was one of my assistants. I knew right away what a great coach she would be because of the way she was with the kids and how hard she worked. I was very proud when she was named coach," said Brothers.

"She comes from a great family and I know how proud they would be of her right now."
