Singer Miley Cyrus has been open about her sexuality, coming out as pansexual and gender fluid in 2015. She explained that even if she was in a heterosexual relationship with her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth, she was still queer.
She has also dated women in the past, most notably Kaitlynn Carter following her divorce.
A Controversial Statement
Because of this, people were shocked to hear Cyrus's comments about being gay during an Instagram live stream. Cyrus was filming with her current boyfriend Cody Simpson and she started talking about how "there are good men out there" and not to give up.
"You don’t have to be gay. There are good people with d*cks out there, you just gotta find them. I always thought I had to be gay because all guys are evil, but that’s not true."
Inevitable Backlash
By implying that people choose to be gay or that women only had to find the right man in order to "cure" their lesbianism/bisexuality, Miley spread a reductive message that many people in the LGBT+ community took issue with. This message can do real harm, and people were quick to point out the flaws in this kind of thinking.
Clarification of The Joke
Miley took to Twitter to clarify her comments, claiming that it was all a joke.
"I was talking sh*t about sucky guys, but let me be clear, YOU don't CHOOSE your sexuality. You are born as you are. It has always been my priority to protect the LGBTQ community I am a part of. 🌈 Happy Monday!"
