MILFORD — Some residents may be pleased to hear that there may soon be a little less Amazon traffic on local roadways.

The online commerce giant announced last week that it will close five of its Massachusetts delivery facilities, including one at 8 Industrial Drive in Milford, as part of a plan to consolidate operations in other locations.

In a statement, Amazon said facilities in Milford, Dedham, Everett, Mansfield and Randolph would be closing as part of a plan to streamline delivery services at newer locations. Employees are being offered positions at other facilities.

"We regularly look at how we can improve the experience for our employees, partners, drivers and customers, and that includes upgrading our facilities," said Amazon spokesperson Caitlin McLaughlin, in a statement. "These facilities provide upgraded amenities, including increased on-site parking, larger operational spaces and better break rooms with open-market vending."

Amazon, which is headquartered in Seattle and posted 2021 revenues of $469.8 billion, did not say when the five affected facilities would close. It's also unclear how many local employees are affected.

Milford Town Administrator Richard Villani said Amazon "just recently advised us" that it would be closing its Industrial Drive facility.

"They did not tell us when it will close for good, but I imagine they will begin phasing operations out of that building," he said.

Amazon has a second Milford presence at 1 National St., site of the former Ardagh Group bottle manufacturing factory. That facility will remain in operation.

Traffic, noise and accidents

Milford residents have expressed frustration with Amazon since its arrival in town a few years ago, pointing to increased traffic, noise and accidents resulting from a constant stream of delivery vehicles coming and going to each facility.

Controversy also erupted when third-party contractors doing work for Amazon began parking in downtown locations, holding up lines at local gas stations and causing accidents throughout the community.

More than a year ago, current Select Board Chair Thomas O'Loughlin was appointed as the town's liaison with Amazon.

O'Loughlin, a former longtime town police chief, couldn't be reached for comment.

Amazon began incorporating changes such as discontinuing a practice of having its vans honk whenever they arrived or left delivery stations.

And last October, Milford approved a zoning bylaw change during Special Town Meeting that closed a loophole that permitted commercial vehicles to be parked in lots throughout town.

The building occupied by Amazon at 8 Industrial Road is owned by Cabot Properties Inc., a Boston-based real estate company. It was built in 1999 and sits on a nearly 30-acre plot.

The property was last assessed at $24 million, according to Milford property records.
